Role at UNESCO:
Non-Executive Director for Education

"I am thrilled to be joining the UK National Commission for UNESCO board as a Non-Executive Director for Education. I’m very much looking forward to contributing my expertise to UNESCO’s important work in supporting education for peace, intercultural understanding and sustainability - and in imagining alternative possibilities for education together. I am especially interested in those alternative possibilities that acknowledge the multiplicity of ways of knowing, being and doing, and that embrace our entanglement in and with human and more-than-human worlds."

Laura Griffin

Laura holds a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and English, a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and a Masters of Arts in Education with a focus on global education and learning.

Laura’s twenty-year journey in education began in 2004 as a primary teacher in inner city Bristol. Later her teaching took her to Paris, London, Buenos Aires, and to Bath. Being part of diverse school communities across contexts, Laura experienced the importance of education grounded in values, reciprocal collaboration and the building of genuine relationships.

Putting her foundational teaching years into action, Laura developed her expertise in global citizenship and sustainability-related education, collaborating on teaching and learning resources with UNESCO ASPnet and UNA-UK. Laura’s interest in curriculum design across multiple levels flourished and next she embarked on a long-standing role as Curriculum Manager, Primary Years Programme (PYP) at the International Baccalaureate (IB), in which she was part of the first whole programme curriculum review for the Primary Years Programme.

Whilst at the IB Laura managed and co-developed multiple projects for the PYP including: the review and development of PYP’s unique curriculum organizing structure of its Transdisciplinary themes (published 2024), curriculum components such as Action in the PYP (published 2018 & 2025), PYP Social studies subject continuum (published 2025), and PYP Observation learning progression (published 2025). Alongside this work, she co-constructed teacher support materials, facilitated presentations, workshops and webinars, and contributed to e-learning resources and micro credentials.

She also collaborated within and across IB programmes and the organization as a whole to contribute her expertise in global citizenship and sustainability to exercise thought leadership, engage in strategic initiatives, participate in expert and multidisciplinary working groups, and co-author internal and external research and publications.

Throughout her time in education Laura has built genuine collaborative relationships with educators, researchers and practitioners in the field, and is committed to education that, in the context of the pressing interdependent social and ecological crises, responds to the urgent call for action for the wellbeing of both people and planet. Through various collaborations with multiple stakeholders, she aims to bring together students, educators and academics to develop educational offerings that support children’s and young people’s engagement in local and global issues.

Laura is also a new Associate Member of Sustainability Frontiers, an international alliance of sustainability and global educators led by Professor. David Selby and Dr. Fumiyo Kagawa.
