UNESCO Designations

Encompassing land-based sites and documentary heritage, designated status is the UNESCO ‘badge’ which demonstrates that a place, item, or location is unique and of global significance and interest.

There are currently four types of UNESCO land-based site designations: Biosphere Reserves, Creative Cities, Global Geoparks, and World Heritage Sites. These land-based site designations are complimented by two further UNESCO designation programmes: Cities of Lifelong Learning (Learning Cities) and Memory of the World.

Each type of designation has specific criteria, processes and protocols for its accreditation programme.
