UNESCO and the Fondation L’Oréal have worked together for more than twenty years and we have the simple belief that the world needs science, and science needs women.
The post-doctoral period is a challenging time for scientists as they work to establish themselves and forge paths towards a permanent research career. Although gender roles surrounding parenting are gradually changing for the better, in this current age many women scientists are still faced with the difficulty of balancing motherhood with such a competitive work environment.
Studies suggest that publishing-bias and misogynistic attitudes are still prevalent throughout the academic community. As such, UNESCO and L’Oréal want to contribute to their recognition and provide them with the means to participate equally in solving the great challenges facing humanity. The awards programme therefore equips women with the tools and support necessary to push forwards with their careers despite limitations imposed due to their gender identity and expression.
“70% of L’Oréal’s global scientific workforce is women”

With unique flexibility, grants may be used (over a 12-month period) to navigate challenges ranging from childcare and international travel costs, to experimental consumables and research assistant salaries.
Our shortlisted (top ten) Rising Talents are provided with media training. Participants are taught the skills necessary to handle a variety of interviews (including TV and Radio), aimed to prepare them for the communication of research to various audiences.
Receiving a shortlisted nomination for this award provides our scientists with a highly coveted networking opportunity. Every May we hold an awards ceremony where we announce our five Rising Talents. Amongst the esteemed guests are members of parliament, journalists, industry leaders and top tier academics from across the nation.
Once a rising talent, winners join a pool of over 50 alumnae who receive networking opportunities at our annual events as well as the opportunity to apply for an ambassador fund grant.
