Candidates for next Director-General of UNESCO announced

The three candidates to become the next Director-General of UNESCO were formally announced on 27 March 2025, and interviews took place in public on Wednesday 9 April, during the 221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris.

The three candidates are for the position of Director-General are Khaled Ahmed EL-ENANY ALI EZZ (Egypt), Firmin Edouard MATOKO (Congo), and Ms Gabriela Ilian RAMOS PATIÑO (Mexico).

The Director-General is nominated by the UNESCO Executive Board in April 2025 and will be appointed by the UNESCO General Conference in October 2025. The Director-General is appointed initially for four years, and may be re-appointed for a further four-year term.
