Loughborough UNESCO Student Network Welcomes New Members

November 1st 2024

Loughborough University’s UNESCO Student Network (LUSN) recently welcomed a new cohort of students during its induction session for the 2024-25 academic year. The meeting attracted 40 students from a wide range of international backgrounds, who are studying on PhD, Masters, and undergraduate programmes at Loughborough.

Co-led by doctoral researchers Mashaer Alyami and Lillie McGuckian from the School of Sport, Exercise, and Health Sciences (SSEHS), LUSN operates under the UNESCO Chair in Sport, Physical Activity, and Education for Development. Supported by faculty members Prof Richard Giulianotti and Dr. Oliver Hooper, the network promotes UNESCO’s mission of peace, dignity, and sustainable development.

The session introduced students to LUSN and highlighted the network’s three central themes: gender equity, cultural diversity, and sustainability. This year, LUSN is introducing Theme Ambassadors, a new role that allows members to take on leadership positions while developing valuable organizational skills. Each theme will guide targeted projects, such as promoting equal opportunities in sport, fostering intercultural understanding, and integrating sustainable practices into events, which align closely with UNESCO’s global mission.

Lillie McGuckian, co-lead of the LUSN said:

“We were thrilled to see such a great turnout and interest in the LUSN at the induction session. The LUSN offers a unique opportunity for students at Loughborough, and I look forward to seeing the projects progress over the coming year.”

Mashaer Alyami, LUSN co-lead, added:

“The induction was a great way to start the year. We’re excited to see our members drive meaningful change and bring UNESCO’s values to life.”
