The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025) Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) is taking place in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The event features keynote addresses, panel discussions, and cultural performances to celebrate this milestone in science and technology and emphasise the significance of quantum science and foster international and interdisciplinary cooperation.

At the two day event on 4th and 5th Februay, the United Kingdom is represented by Sir Peter Knight, Professor, Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London, Chair of the Quantum Metrology Institute, National Physical Laboratory and co-chair of the Steering Committee of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Sir Peter will give the closing remarks on the first day.

Other sessions include debates on the ethical challenges of quantum advancements and the need for an anticipatory approach and a global reflection to understand the potential benefits and risks of these powerful technologies.

The 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics. Numerous events are taking place throughout 2025 to mark the International Year, including many in the United Kingdom.
