European UNESCO National Commissions meet to discuss their future role and priorities within the UNESCO global framework

March 25th 2025

Earlier this month James Bridge, UKNC Chief Executive and Secretary-General, joined counterparts from across Europe to discuss how National Commissions can best play an influential role in the future of UNESCO.

During the meeting participants shared best practice and discussed matters relating to UNESCO's 80th anniversary, the implementation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Convention at a Member State level, and how National Commissions can best engage with the UNESCO Secretariat to shape UNESCO policy and meet member state priorities.

It was agreed to propose that the strengthening of the role of National Commissions in UNESCO's Draft Programme and Budget for 2026-29 (43/C5) should be raised with the global network of National Commissions for UNESCO; and be a point for discussion at the Traditional Meeting of National Commissions taking place in April 2025.

The group also discussed the present importance of ensuring a focus on UNESCO Constitutional goal of peace, both within the National Commissions network and with UNESCO designated sites.
