The UNESCO Chair in the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Expansion of Political Space, led by Professor Paul Gready and based at the Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR) University of York, has published two new working papers.

Climate Change Activisms by Academics: Opportunities, Strategies and Risks

Academics have been key to identifying the problem and nature of climate change, its potential diverse impacts, and actions and timescales required to ameliorate those impacts. This working paper is based on research that has investigated responses of academics to global environmental climate change. It focuses on the extent to which academics adopt a range of activisms, advocacy, activist practices and stances with the consequential opportunities, strategies and risks.

Youth, Protests and the Polycrisis

There has been a significant increase in global protests in recent decades, with students and young people at the forefront. This working paper explores protests as a preferred method of political engagement by young people and an expression of their future aspirations. While cautioning about the risks, this paper assesses the transformative potential of youth participation in protests, combining quantitative research and qualitative insights, including from young people themselves.
