Perth UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art

Perth is the UK’s only UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art. Known as a ‘Craftis Toun’ as far back as Medieval times, Perth has always been a hotbed of innovative crafting. Today, Perth is still home to a huge variety of crafters and artisans, many preserving historical crafts such as weaving and kiltmaking, while others are using cutting edge technologies to develop new craft methods. Visit Perth to see Perth Museum (opened in 2024) and get a flavour of the city’s craft culture, historical and present.

What makes this UNESCO Designation special?

Craft is an integral part of this area’s history. Mediaeval Perth was a centre of craft production and trade. By the early 1500s, Perth was known as a ‘Craftis Toun’. This reputation has stayed with the region throughout the centuries, and today there is still a thriving and reputable Craft and Folk Art sector.
