The SS Great BritainHome
The SS Great Britain was launched in Bristol in 1843, construction having begun in 1839. Described as ‘the greatest experiment since creation’ she was the largest ship in the world, and the first iron hulled screw propelled ocean-going steam ship. Amongst the many innovations brought together by her engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel the screw propeller was the most ground-breaking and represents a pivotal moment in world maritime history.
