The Shenzhen Design Award for Young Talents (SDAY) is an international, professional competition for young designers under 35 who are from one of the UNESCO Creative Cities worldwide.
Launched in 2013, SDAY hopes to encourage and reward young creatives who have made an outstanding contribution to making cities more environmentally friendly, society more harmonious and development more sustainable.
There are 21 awards in total: 1 Grand Award (Professional Group, RMB100,000), 10 Merit Awards (Professional Group, RMB30,000 per winner), 10 New Star Awards (Student Group, RMB20,000 per winner), plus up to 3 Best Nominator Honorary prizes.
Previous winners include the ‘Sociometer’ designed by a team of three students from Dundee UNESCO Creative City of Design. Receiving a New Star award, the Sociometer visually measures Wi-Fi activity in a social environment. Designed to fit the interior of a traditional Scottish Bar, the Sociometer aims to reduce the distraction of our phones by highlighting how much we use them in a social setting.
Applications should be sent to Dundee UNESCO City of Design: [email protected]

‘The Grand Award winner project in the professional group starts from children’s language-learning process in an environment such as the supermarket and connects design with education via typography design as a tool for communication…. Culture has a fundamental role to play in rising to the challenges of our century. In the face of global fractures, and the paralysis of some institutional platforms, it is a common language that breaks down barriers’
Ziyuan Wang, Professor of School of Design, Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA)
