The UNESCO-Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers was created in 2008 to support the improvement of teaching and learning quality in achieving the Education for All Goals, which is one of UNESCO’s priorities.

The UNESCO-Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers seeks to improve the quality of the educational system and encourages initiatives, innovation and excellence in all literary and scientific domains.

Applicants are required to submit a project which has made a significant contribution to enhancing teaching and learning by demonstrating innovation aimed at promoting the effectiveness of teachers, by producing teaching materials or other special aids designed for the development of innovative teach and learning, by mobilising initiatives and/or means likely to contribute to enhancing teacher effectiveness, and by strengthening coordination and research that inform and enhance teacher effectiveness.  The project must be on-going for at least three years.

Previous winners include Sabre Education for The Fast-track Transformational Teacher Training Programme, UK, for its highly innovative and impactful approach to training teachers in Ghana.  It promotes child-centred and play-based pedagogy in early education to replace traditional chalk disciplinarian methods.  Practicing teachers receive a two-year training, combining workshops with smaller peer group meetings in which they are paired on the basis of their complementary strengths to engage in classroom observations and in class coaching.
