UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize

Established in 1989, with the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea, the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize gives special consideration to the development and use of mother-tongue literacy education and training.
Established in 1989 the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize awards programmes that focus on the development and use of mother-tongue literacy education and training.
Funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea, the Prize commemorates King Sejong who fought against illiteracy and invented the Korean alphabet.
Two winners are awarded each year. Previous prize winners include the National Office of Literacy and Education for Adults in Algeria for its ‘National Strategy for Multilingual Literacy’ programme, Textile Fibres and Development Company (SODEFITEX) in Senegal for its ‘Functional literacy and follow-up vocational training for farmers in southern Senegal in national languages’, and the Ministry of Education and Culture in Uruguay for its ‘Permanent Learning Programme’.
