This could include research, education, training or awareness raising or a noteworthy role in establishing and managing a protected area, such as Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Global Geoparks and natural World Heritage Sites.

Between 1 and 3 winners are chosen every two years by the Director-General of UNESCO, following the recommendations of an international jury of experts.

The Prize is awarded at The World Science Forum where the prize winner/s, are invited to give a lecture on the subject of their award.

Previous winners include the Bangalore-based Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) for its participatory approach to improving environmental conservation and the creation and promotion of sustainable livelihoods, and The National Parks Board of Singapore for its work promoting biodiversity in an urban environment.
