As early as 1960, UNESCO adopted the first universal instrument dedicated to preserving and managing museums, recognising their essential role in education and sharing the cultural diversity of the world. The adoption in November 2015 of the Recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections, their Diversity and their Role in Society consitututed a decisive step towards developing and implementing an innovative and open vision of museums in the twenty-first century.
