What does UNESCO mean to you?
It is probably one of our Designated Sites across the UK; perhaps the ancient majesty of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage site? The poetry of Norwich, UNESCO City of Literature? Or the waves crashing against the cliffs of Shetland's UNESCO Global Geopark?
These places tell Britain's story: its landscapes, peoples, innovations, and traditions. But they also carry our hopes for the future.
We do not own these places; they belong to local communities, charities and associations, societies and institutions across the UK. But we work alongside them, and bring them together, to encourage community action, strengthen local leadership, and amplify their power to engage, educate and inspire.
Why local action matters
We focus on a huge number of global problems, but powerful change begins right where we live. It occurs when local people come together - neighbours, schools, businesses, community associations, and local authorities - to create real solutions.
With your support, we help spark and sustain this energy in communities across the UK.
The power of local people and communities
We believe that local people know their community best. They know the most urgent and relevant issues - but too often, they feel like a small voice struggling to be heard. We bridge that gap, and take knowledge and power from Local to Global.
Being part of the UK's network of UNESCO designations does more than protect what matters: it empowers local communities. It gives them recognition, a platform, and a shared framework for coordinated action. What we do also matters beyond UNESCO sites, through our programmes such as Climate Change and UNESCO Heritage we are deveoping tools and approaches to help communities to come together to drive meaningful and transformative change.
The impact of your legacy gift
We rely on statutory funding for day-to-day activities. Many Foundations are brilliant in supporting local initiatives. We are looking to build the financial strength of the Commission to grow and fulfil an ambitious and sustainable long-term future.
Every legacy gift to UNESCO in the UK is a gift that we will not just treasure, but use for the best purposes at the time.
Legacy gifts to consider
- A percentage of what you are worth: This can range from 1% to 100% of your assets, whatever suits you.
- A cash gift of any sum of money: is always welcome but bear in mind this will not keep up with inflation.
- Investments: You can leave us stocks, shares or any other investments if you prefer.
We always advise consulting a solicitor. When you discuss your gift with your solicitor you will need these details:
- Full Name: United Kingdom National Commission for UNESCO
- Private Company Ltd by Guarantee Number: 05966672
- Registered Address: Suite 98, 3 Whitehall Court, London, SW1A 2EL
Please note we are a non-profit organisation but not a charity, so there are currently no inheritance tax benefits for your Estate.
