UKNC Culture Director and Vice-Chair/President Helen Maclagan OBE comes to the end of her term
UK National Commission for UNESCO – March 29, 2021
Meet the UKNC’s two new Non-Executive Directors for Culture
Helen Maclagan led the UK National Commission for UNESCO’s (UKNC’s) culture portfolio as Non-Executive Director for seven years with great skill and dedication. She provided expert advice to ministers and officials and represented the UK highly effectively at the UNESCO Executive Board, General Conference and World Heritage Committee, notably boosting the UK’s impact there.
She championed the UK’s UNESCO designations and advised existing and prospective UK UNESCO World Heritage Sites, contributing significantly to the new sites gaining UNESCO status (the latest being Jodrell Bank Observatory). Helen was exceptional as Vice-Chair/President of the UKNC, a role to which she was unanimously elected in 2018.
Helen co-authored, with Kate Pugh OBE and Moira Nash, the influential “Cultural Heritage Innovation – Opportunities for International Development” report. Most recently, Helen both co-organised and spoke as keynote at the global online Heritage and Our Sustainable Future conference.
In 2018, Helen was awarded the OBE, “For services to Heritage and Culture.” She is an outstanding representative for the UKNC and UK, who will be much missed. The UKNC looks forward to seeing what she does next!
