The date of 29 November is observed as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People since 1978.

This date, which was chosen because of its meaning and significance to the Palestinian people, is based on the call by the United Nations General Assembly for an annual observance of the resolution on the partition of Palestine. What has become known as the Partition Plan or the Resolution 181 (II), intended to establish an Arab State and a Jewish State, and was adopted on 29 November 1947.

The International Day of Solidarity traditionally provides an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people have yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property, from which they have been displaced.

For 31 years (since 1986), UNESCO has been celebrating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People through the development of education, culture, sciences and freedom of expression. These goals shape all of UNESCO’s actions to foster dialogue and exchange; counter all forms of racism and hatred, in order to build peace in the minds of all women and men and restore the foundations of living together in harmony and security.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

“As an agency of the United Nations system mandated to promote peace through education, science and culture, UNESCO is using all the instruments within its fields of competence to help ensure that Palestinians have the material and intellectual conditions for a dignified life.”

— Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO

Why are International Days important? They provide unique opportunities to transmit UNESCO values to the world.

INTERNATIONAL DAYS

International days also provide a unique opportunity to engage citizens on global issues, to mobilise political will and resources to address these problems, but also to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity as well as remember some of our darkest times as they guide us towards building a better world.

The United Nations International Days are for everyone, all around the globe. Because they are open, you can have an important role to play in them. NGOs, universities, schools, press and more will be putting together campaigns, events, and calls to action worldwide to provide further opportunities to engage, learn, and transmit the values and knowledge associated with each International Day. They serve as an important vehicle to connect the local to the international.

At their root, UN International Days contribute to the achievement of the purposes of the UN Charter and promote awareness of and action on important political, social, cultural, humanitarian or human rights issues. International days are at the heart of the United Nations Charter. They work to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as neighbours, and to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security.
