An Accredited Expert, Professor Alan Jenkins, represents the UK government on the IHP Council – the UN body devoted to water research and management and related education and capacity development.
Alan is the Director of Science at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). A hydrologist by training, Alan Chairs the UK IHP National Committee and leads the UK input to UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP). In his early career, Professor Jenkins focused on water quality science, including experimental field monitoring and modelling approaches, and delivering projects both nationally and internationally.
Alan has extensive experience of working within the UN system as; Hydrological Advisor to the UK Government with WMO; as a Member of the WMO Hydrological Coordination Panel, and as Leader of the WMO Task Team for the Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS).
In Europe, he is a Member of the Science Advisory Group of the EU Water Joint Programming Initiative, UK representative on the European Network of Water Research Institutes (EURAQUA). In the UK, he is Co-Director of Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University, a Member of the UK National Hazards Partnership, Steering Committee and a Member of the Scottish Government Centre for Research in Water, Programme Steering Group. He is an Honorary Professor at Lancaster University and a Visiting Professor at University College, London.
